University of California researchers: Walter Leal, Zain Syed reported that they found "nonanal" a powerful semiochemical triggers the mosquitoes' keen sense of smell directing them towards a blood meal. They also found that the nonanal acts synergetically with CO2 i.e. Carbon Di Oxide. Using a bait of a combination of nonanal and CO2, they drew as many as 2,000 mosquitoes in a night.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
I found that mosquitoes were swarming around me on the nights I had taken sugar or sweets. The next in the mosquito temptation ranks oily foods. Tea also draws mosquitoes. Bitter coffee seem to act as a mosquito repellant.
PROBABLE REASONS
Mosquitoes are common in paddy fields and grasslands of India. Grass seems to attract mosquitoes apart from cess pools. Sugar in India is obtained from sugar cane, which is a strain of grass.
Sugar prices have risen in India from Rs. 16/- per kg. to Rs. 40 per kg. (from 30 cents to 80 cents nearly). People may eat less sugar at these prices. They will attract less mosquitoes. Consequently, we can be more free from lethal diseases like malaria and chronic painful diseases like hydrocil and elephantiasis.
I greatly appreciate the scientific finding of Dr. Walter Leal and Zain Syed.
